From Mao to Mozart – A Musical Encounter with Wang Jian
VIEW EVENT DETAILSFilm screening and discussion with Wang Jian, cellist
The 1980 Oscar-winning documentary From Mao to Mozart: Isaac Stern in China showcases the experiences of famous violinist and music teacher Isaac Stern as the first American musician to collaborate with the China Central Symphony Society (now China National Symphony Orchestra). Cellist Wang Jian was featured in the documentary while he was a 10-year old student at the Shanghai Conservatoire. Stern’s encouragement and support paved the way for Wang to go to the U.S. and enter the Yale School of Music in 1985 to study with Aldo Parisot. Wang has since performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Philadelphia, Chicago, and Boston Symphonies, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the London Symphony, among others.
Wang will appear in a special post-screening discussion to talk about his passion for music, his memories of the meeting with Isaac Stern that changed his life, and his journey to international prominence.
