In the desolate Altai mountains of western Mongolia, where the winters are brutally cold, live the last of the men who hunt with eagles. Kazakh nomads have been grazing their livestock in this isolated region for hundreds of years and only the toughest survive here. Fascinated by the special bond that develops between man and eagle, award-winning photographer Palani Mohan spent four years documenting the burkitshi, as the hunters are known as in Kazakh. But this is a culture under threat. There are no more than fifty to sixty “true” hunters left and each winter claims a few more.
These images and the book are an enthralling and timely record of these noble men and their magnificent eagles in a dramatic and unforgiving part of our planet.
Palani Mohan will share his stories and screen a photographic slideshow as he launches his new book “Hunting with Eagles” which will be available after the talk.
Indian born, Australian raised, and now living in Hong Kong, Palani’s work has been widely published by many of the world’s leading publications. He is the author of five books and working on his sixth, on Hong Kong. His work is part of the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London and his images have been shown widely around the globe including at the prestigious Visa Pour L’Image in Perpignan, France. He has been recognized with awards including World Press Photo, Picture of the Year International, CHIPP, Communication Arts, and Sony International.
