Workshop with Dylan Kwok & Maarit Eskola, Designers
“For us, the Asia Society Hong Kong Center building's finest quality is the way it embraces nature within the compound that surrounds it! The forest here seems to be enchanted with an almost spiritual quality – it’s as if there were spirits and phantoms dwelling within the bushes and trees!” - Dylan Kwok, Designer
Reflecting on how humans lived in the wild thousands of years ago to modern day urbanites assisted by rapid technological advancement, participants at this workshop will re-think what minimal living is by appreciating their physical and tangible surroundings. During the workshop, they will be asked to imagine themselves micrified, then build a house with one window only and to live in it. Participants will walk around Asia Society Hong Kong Center to find a location with the best scenery for the window in their house. The workshop will encourage participants to pay attention again to neither the Internet nor their smartphones but the environment in which they live in.
Dylan Kwok is co-owner of the ground-breaking PIORA project initially began by Korean furniture designer Hyejin Ahn with waxed paper art lamps in 2006. In 2010, Dylan and Hyejin Ahn came together and refined the project by introducing non-profit workshops, exhibitions and plans for artistic installations across their series. After living abroad for 15 years, he has returned to Hong Kong for good and is now with the Design Institute for Social Innovation of at Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s School of Design. Through his exposure to different cultural settings, Dylan has developed a strong interest in the relationship between humanistic design and urban environment. Dylan received his Master’s degree in spatial design at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, Finland.
