Join this tour to take an in-depth look at a New Territories market, where you can find local wet goods, fresh meat, fish, fruits, cooked food, non-food related dry goods and more. The tour will also venture through the streets to visit some of the oldest food shops, and provide the chance to taste a selection of what they cook daily. Led by Sidney Cheung, the tour will introduce some of the traditional street foods that are renowned in Hong Kong culture, as well as the source of their ingredients and the way that they are prepared. Guest Chef to the White House State Dinner for President Obama and Xi Jinping in 2015, Chef Anita Lo, will also be joining this tour. Come hungry, leave happy!
Sidney C. H. CHEUNG is Professor of the Department of Anthropology, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and Director of the BA Programme of Cultural Management, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research interests include visual anthropology, anthropology of tourism, heritage studies, food and identity, fragrance and ethnicity; his co-edited and edited books include Tourism, Anthropology and China (White Lotus, 2001), The Globalization of Chinese Food (RoutledgeCurzon, 2002), Food and Foodways in Asia: Resource, Tradition and Cooking (Routledge, 2007) and Rethinking Asian Food Heritage (Foundation of Chinese Dietary Culture in Taipei, 2015). He also serves as a partner of the UNESCO Chair project of Tours University, France on “Safeguarding and promotion of Cultural Food Heritage,” and a member of the Scientific Committee of Greenline Heritage conference series in Portugal since 2008.
Anita Lo, chef and owner of Annisa in New York City, is one of the most respected chefs in the country, earning numerous accolades for her inventive contemporary American cuisine that reflects her multicultural upbringing and classic French training.
