Join us for an exploration into China's underbelly. James Kynge, author of China Shakes the World and Principal for the FT's China Confidential, will share his insights on the relatively hidden forms of consumer vibrancy, the shadow finance system's embedded risks and forms of corruption - both facilitative and debilitating. What are the unique investment opportunities and pitfalls to consider?
James Kynge spent over two decades as a journalist in Asia, initially for Reuters and then as the Beijing Bureau Chief for the Financial Times between 1998 and 2005. He covered many of the events during this time - including Japanese deflation, the Tiananmen Square massacre, the rise to nationhood of the five former Soviet central Asian republics in the early 1990s, the Asian financial crisis of 1997, and China's reform and opening since 1998. The recipient of several awards for journalism, his book, China Shakes the World, was an international bestseller translated into 19 languages and won two prizes for non-fiction. Mr. Kynge founded China Confidential, which provides predictive analysis of China’s key economic trends, using a suite of monthly proprietary data. It also delivers Custom Research for investment funds and corporates on the consumer, financial and real estate sectors. Prior to that, Mr. Kynge headed up the Pearson Plc Group of companies in China, overseeing a phase of rapid expansion for Pearson in the China market, marked by the acquisition of three education companies and the establishment of two subsidiaries.
