In recent years, the European project has been challenged as never before. The vision of integration often seemed overshadowed by the real threat of disintegration. The financial crisis and soon after the refugee crisis have played into the hands of EU skeptics. The latest stepping stone already seems to be Britain’s national referendum on June 23 on whether to leave or remain in the European Union, which splits Britons and Europeans alike. A recent poll by Ipsos Mori concluded that nearly half of citizens in eight EU countries surveyed wanted a similar referendum. How will the EU look after the referendum? Where is it heading to? How will the latest developments affect the future of Greece, already struggling to deal with a debt crisis? For decades the EU was a bright example also for other continents and regions. Is it still a model to follow? How can the EU remain a significant player in global affairs?
George A. Papandreou served as Prime Minister of Greece between 2009 and 2011, at the height of the Greek government debt crisis. He was named as one of Foreign Policy magazine’s Top 100 Global Thinkers in 2010 for “making the best of Greece’s worst year.” Mr. Papandreou was Foreign Minister from 1999 to 2004 and was widely praised for his diplomatic bridge building, including successfully negotiating better relations with former rival Turkey. As Education Minister between 1994 and 1996, he founded the Open University in Greece, an innovative national effort to facilitate undergraduate and graduate distance learning. Mr. Papandreou is President of the Socialist International, the largest global organization of progressive political parties and President of the newly founded party Movement of Democratic Socialists. He is a member of Club de Madrid. Mr. Papandreou graduated from Amherst College in Massachusetts and continued his graduate studies at the London School of Economics.
