Afternoon Discussion with YEUNG CHIN, Hong Kong fashion designer and MAX TAN, Singaporean fashion designer
Auditorium, Level 2, National Design Centre, 111 Middle Road, Singapore 188969
Discussion 2:00pm,
Close 3:30pm
Good design is built on solid concepts based on our comprehension of the world around us, influenced not only by our present circumstances, but also our collective pasts and possible futures. While our shared cultural heritage is important, it must never be allowed to constrain us, and contemporary designers must set their sights squarely on the future. How are fashion designers pushing the boundaries of our imaginations and creating innovations that drive lifestyle changes and affect our aesthetic perceptions? The afternoon discussion will feature two fashion designers - Yeung Chin and Max Tan.
Yeung Chin, fashion designer, is best known for his creative flair in the reconfiguration of the body shape through his clothing design. Instead of simply mixing and matching, he creates his own definition of aesthetics by experimenting with extreme materials, such as pairing raw wood with soft fabrics. He participated to Hong Kong Fashion week from 2003 to 2006 and his innovative ideas have enabled him to play a key role in designing the main sportswear line for the China team in the Olympic Games in Beijing. Yeung graduated with a MA in Fashion Design from the University of Westminster in 2009, an ex-student in Alternatif Fashion Workshop and his work was presented at the London Cheers Exhibition in 2009. He established his brand in 2013 and open the Flagship located in PMQ the same year. He recently started to explore the international market during New York in September 2015 by presenting is SS16 collection. After encouraging feedbacks from cutting edge buyers and key players in the international fashion scene, he is now focusing on developing the brand internationally.
After graduating in 2006 at the top of his school in Fashion Design from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Max Tan went on to show his first collection at the Singapore Fashion Week in 2007 and was awarded the second runner-up position at the Singapore Fashion Designers Content. With the recognition that he received from the competition, Max started his own label max.tan and continued to create one-off pieces and capsule collections to meet the increasing demand for his designs. The label made its debut with the full-fledged S/S 2010 “Pressed” collection at PARCO next NEXT, a fashion design incubator project jointly created by Parco Singapore department store and the Textile & Fashion Federation (TaFf). Today, max.tan is stocked in key retail outlets throughout Singapore, as well as making its first inroads in the international retail scene.
Ivonnn Law (moderator) is the Founder and Creative Producer of VONQUESTON Showroom and Gallery, a dedicated showroom and gallery representing a select group of emerging artists and designers from Asia. She is also the Managing Director of VONQUESTON, a design and business consultancy based in Singapore providing creative concepts and sustainable solutions tailored for art, fashion and lifestyle industries.
