On the weekend following International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Asia Society Hong Kong Center will hold an afternoon screening of the film Exodus (1960), featuring Paul Newman and Eva Marie Saint. The story, which is based on the 1958 best-selling novel by American novelist, Leon Uris, focuses on the establishment of the State of Israel after World War II. Exodus focuses on the establishment of the State of Israel after World War II. It follows Ari Ben Canaan, an Israeli resistance leader, as he tries to help a group of 600 Jewish immigrants escape British-blocked Cypress for Palestine. The film follows the events surrounding the Jewish refugee ship Exodus in Cyprus in 1947 as well as the developments in Palestine during the founding of the modern state of Israel in 1948. Exodus received numerous awards including an Academy Award for Best Original Score, a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor, and Best Soundtrack Album and Song of the Year at the Grammys.
Dov Landau, one of the real life figures behind the character of the same name in the novel and the movie, will be speaking at Asia Society Hong Kong Center on Monday to share his harrowing accounts of life during those years.
