Designed for children aged 5 to 8, this family workshop provides a stimulating environment for children to learn, and to explore the theme of the exhibition with their parents or caregivers. The theme of this family workshop is silkworms and metamorphosis. Participating families will complete a treasure hunt focusing on Xu Bing’s Silkworm Series. The workshop will be led by students from the University of Hong Kong Fine Arts Department who will talk about the design of the treasure hunt and share fun facts about raising the silkworms featured in artworks on show. Kids will closely observe living silkworms, feed them and even touch them. Finally, kids will have an opportunity to create their own silkworm series.
It Begins with Metamorphosis: Xu Bing is on show at Asia Society Hong Kong Center from May 8 – August 31, 2014. Curated by Dr. Yeewan Koon, this is the first major solo exhibition of Xu Bing in Hong Kong featuring some of the latest artworks by this renowned artist. Silkworm Series includes two pieces of Xu Bing’s exhibit: Silkworm Book, 2014 and The Opening, 1998. Here, gradually, the mulberry branches will be consumed and the pages covered, leaving only silken traces as reminders of the brevity of the silkworms’ lifecycle.
