Driving Investment in Australia’s Largest State: Hong Kong's Role
VIEW EVENT DETAILS"Hong Kong's Role in Delivering Stronger Sino-New South Wales Trade Relations"
Luncheon Presentation by Barry O'Farrell MP, Premier of New South Wales, Australia
New South Wales (NSW) plays an important role in Australia's economic and social development, and has the largest Chinese and Chinese-Australian population among all the states. Since China's open door policy was adopted three decades ago, China and NSW have developed an increasingly close relationship. China is NSW's largest trading partner and the biggest source of overseas students in the state. China has become the second largest export market and the biggest import source for NSW. How should the NSW-China relationship be defined? How can the two sides consolidate its economic and trade relations? In what areas can they expand cooperation? How important is China to NSW and vice versa? What role does Hong Kong play with regard to infrastructure investment in NSW?
Barry O'Farrell was sworn in as the 43rd Premier of New South Wales in March 2011, and is also the Minister for Western Sydney. O'Farrell has been a member of the Liberal Party since 1980 and was first elected in 1995 to the NSW Parliament. He was Leader of the Opposition between 2007 and 2011. O'Farrell has a strong background in public policy having worked in the field at both state and federal levels. O'Farrell graduated from the Australian National University, majoring in Australian History and Aboriginal Studies.
