Delegated FabricationVIEW EVENT DETAILS
Imminent Domain Designers Workshop Series
Workshop with Wendy W Fok, designer
“A shape, a volume, a color, a surface is something itself. It shouldn't be concealed as part of a fairly different whole.” — Donald Clarence Judd (1928–94)
It has been widely publicized that most of Donald Clarence Judd’s work from 1964 onwards was delegated rather than fabricated by the artist himself. Instead of constructing his work personally, Judd had it industrially fabricated — a practice criticized at the time but emulated today by many contemporary artists.
This workshop will investigate, critically examine and apply both theoretical study and practical design-research into the highly debated concept of "delegated fabrication" in the field of architectural design. The aim of this workshop is to develop an active prototype, where participants work together to design, fabricate and discuss the potential of hands-on digital and analogue learning. Participants will be expected to investigate formal, geometrical, scalar and material effects, along with understanding the larger potential of teamwork and practical applications of physical large-scale prototyping, and installation. A hypothetical site at the Asia Society will be used as the backdrop of the design prototype.
(Note: We strongly recommend that participants bring their own laptops and download Rhino before the workshop.)
From interior design to installation works and urban regeneration, Wendy W Fok continues to challenge the dynamic significance in structuring and mapping the ideals of art, architecture and urbanism through sustainable planning, material research and alternative methods of fabrication with progressive designs within the built environment. Fok has participated in several international architectural projects, exhibitions and competitions, including the London Design Festival TENT (2012) and Hong Kong and Shenzhen Bi-City Biennale (2011/12). She received her Masters degree in Architecture and Certification of Urban Policy/Regional Planning at Princeton University's School of Architecture.
