Collecting Chinese Art in Hong Kong: A Global Phenomenon

[Full house]

One-day workshop presented by the Department of Fine Arts, Chinese University of Hong Kong

Collectors, dealers, auction houses, and academics will participate in a dialogue on the role of Hong Kong on the globalization of Chinese art collecting in the 20th-21st centuries.  In addition to the city’s favorable free port status for the exchange of goods, Hong Kong has served as an international cross-road for individual collectors and dealers whose close interactions gave rise to a small but influential network of art connoisseurs. Their collecting and philanthropic activities, and their international life-styles, helped promote the status of Chinese ceramics, jades, paintings, furniture, and other objects as timeless works of art in a global context.  Experts will share their personal experiences and insights working with Chinese art, addressing some of the pivotal social, cultural, and historical factors that have contributed most to Hong Kong’s strategic position in the global art world.

Speakers include:
Cheung Ngai Yee, Ph.D.
Leo Goodstadt, Honorary University Fellow, University of Hong Kong; Former Head of Central Policy Unit, HKG
