Atul Gawande, surgeon, writer and public health researcher, will address how the human experience of mortality is changing rapidly and dramatically across Asia as people live longer and gain greater access to medical care. Many of the changes mirror a transformation that occurred in the West medicalizing the end of life - with the most common place for dying shifting from the home to the hospital. The medicalization of mortality, however, is an experiment that is failing in terms of cost and even more importantly in terms of suffering. Atul Gawande’s international bestseller “Being Mortal” offers directions for recognizing that well-being for most people goes beyond than mere bodily survival. Book sale after program.
Atul Gawande practices general and endocrine surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He is Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Samuel O. Thier Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. He is also Director of Ariadne Labs, a joint center for health systems innovation, and Chairman of Lifebox, a nonprofit organization making surgery safer globally. Prof. Gawande is a staff writer for The New Yorker magazine and has written four New York Times bestsellers: “Complications”, “Better”, “The Checklist Manifesto”, and most recently, “Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End”. He is the winner of two National Magazine Awards, AcademyHealth’s Impact Award for highest research impact on healthcare, a MacArthur Fellowship, and the Lewis Thomas Award for writing about science.
