Hong Kong’s youth today live in a city vastly different from the one their parents knew. Between the 1970s and 1990s, as Hong Kong positioned itself as the gateway to Mainland China, accelerated economic growth resulted in ample job opportunities and rapid upward social mobility. Yet, the current generation faces limited job prospects, amid slower growth and a narrower economic structure. Despite higher educational attainment, a larger proportion of youth is employed in lower-skilled occupations, unable to secure jobs that offer adequate incomes and opportunities to progress. In the meantime, employers are faced with the ongoing challenge of recruiting talent with the sought-after soft and technical skills.
A successful school-to-work transition is critical for young people, as they kick-start their careers. Many students view further studies as the only option forward after graduating from secondary school, despite the availability of other career options, such as vocational and entrepreneurial pathways. Yet, more schooling has not translated to more industry-required skills, rendering the city’s youth ill-prepared to enter the job market.
The forum, which addresses the new administration’s key themes of resolving challenges in education and career development, will look at how different sectors of society can help equip Hong Kong’s youth with the tools, skills and support systems they need to embark upon their careers. It will also explore alternatives in school-to-work transitions, and entrepreneurship and innovation as a means to broaden economic opportunity for the youth.
