A Deeper Understanding of 'The Grandmaster'
HONG KONG, October 30, 2014 — Hing Chao, founder of the International Guoshu Association, was invited to share his insights on the local martial arts community drawing from Wong Kar Wai’s 2013 film The Grandmaster. Based on the story of Ip Man, a martial arts master who practiced Wing Chun, and who is famously known as the teacher of actor Bruce Lee, The Grandmaster reflects the mou lam (武林) community in Hong Kong during the 1930s.
Chao delved into the different personalities of the characters within the film, linking the historical aspects and lineages of various schools of martial arts. He also compared the post-war martial arts community in Hong Kong between the film and in real life to show a picture of the people who practice this sport.
