Hiroshima Joins Asia Society’s Global Cities Education Network
NEW YORK, August 5, 2015 — Asia Society announced today that the Hiroshima Prefecture Board of Education has been chosen to join the Global Cities Education Network (GCEN), a community of cities in Asia and North America working to improve education for millions of children. The announcement coincides with the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, and highlights its rebirth as one of Asia’s most important cities.
The Japanese city will join existing network members Singapore, Shanghai, Seoul, Melbourne, Denver, Seattle, Houston, Lexington and Toronto. Hiroshima was selected through recommendations, site visits, discussion with city leaders and an application process.
“We are please to welcome Hiroshima and excited to share their work globally, continuing our practice of sourcing the best ideas in education from around the world,” said Jessica Kehayes, Executive Director, Education at Asia Society.
Network cities learn from one another to apply best practices in education to their own systems – exploring high quality professional learning systems, career and technical education, how to educate students for the 21st century and develop global competencies.
