An Evening Presentation by Maya Lin, Architect and Artist
Award-winning architect and artist Maya Lin propelled to fame in 1981, when, as a 21-year old Yale undergraduate student, she had her design selected for the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC. Lin maintains a careful balance in her career between art and architecture, creating a remarkable body of work that includes large-scale site-specific installations, intimate studio artworks, and architectural works. The latter have been critically acclaimed both nationally and internationally. A committed environmentalist, Lin focuses on green issues, promoting sustainable building design in her works. Recently she completed the design for the Museum of Chinese in America in Lower Manhattan and Storm King Wavefield, an 11-acre earthwork reclamation project at Storm King Art Center in New York State's Hudson River Valley.
Meanwhile, through her artwork, she encourages people to pay closer attention to the natural world. Lin has had solo museum exhibitions in the US, Italy, Denmark, and Sweden. She is working on the last of her memorial pieces entitled What is Missing?
Lin received her BA and her Master of Architecture from Yale University. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Presidential Design Award, an AIA Honor Award, the Finn Juhl Prize, and honorary doctorates from among others, Yale, Harvard, Williams College, and Smith College. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
