The Mathis High School for International Studies offers students the opportunity to complete a rigorous academic and personal development program designed to help them discover themselves as learners, develop the tools and resources that will assure successful entry into a university or professional setting upon graduation, and assume their places as citizens of the world. The small school size, grade level teaming for teachers, and innovative curriculum facilitate the creation of relationships that form the foundation for rich and successful learning. Students complete the requirements to earn the top Texas High School Diploma plan and may also earn the Distinguished Achievement Plan. Students enroll in classes taught at the Pre Advanced Placement, Advanced Placement, and/or Dual Credit levels. In addition, students have the opportunity to earn up to four semesters of college credit in the Early College program. Students also take language classes in Spanish and/or Chinese, learn technology, and will have opportunities for travel. They may participate in athletics, band, choir, theatre, 4H and other extracurricular activities at Mathis High School.
School Highlights
Students completed a summer program of activities that included reading the book Seedfolks
by Paul Fleischman and attending book chats that were held around town
in Mathis and were also attended by MHSIS teachers and other adult
readers. Students also attended two days of summer academies where
they participated in team building activities and helped to draft the
school’s mission statement. Students and teachers also traveled to
Corpus Christi for a visit to the museum of Asian Cultures. In
addition, teachers from MHSIS all attended the ISSN Summer Institute,
where they were very impressed with the level of professional
development activities and where they were invigorated with the
expeditionary nature of the sessions.
School Voices
Mathis has such great spirit, and the community deserves the type of
opportunity that the International Studies program represents for
students and families. The vision and hard work of many people have
made it possible for us to begin to bridge our students, their families
and our community to the world. -Liz Ozuna, Principal
