The International Studies Learning Center (ISLC) is a small learning community that serves the city of South Gate as part of the Los Angeles Unified School District.  ISLC provides a California State Standards based curriculum augmented by the international studies focus.  Going into its sixth year, ISLC continues on its mission to prepare high school graduates who are problem solvers, aware of global issues, and academically and culturally literate for the 21st century.  ISLC course offerings include core curriculum infused with global issues, plus classes such as world drumming, Model United Nations, and advanced courses in Chinese and Japanese.  Unique to ISLC is our practice of Council, held in advisory classes, which we use to build community through the sharing of our stories.  Staff Councils and Parent Councils are also held monthly. ISLC has adopted a region of study for each grade level as a cumulative and collective process of studying the world.  Annually, we celebrate world cultures during our Dragon Festival.

School Highlights
International Studies Learning Center is thrilled to have met its API. The school also has been awarded an Early College Grant from the State of California, which enables one third of its high school students to enrolled in at least one college course. In addition, ISLC students traveled to Europe and China in the last two years.

School Voices
ISLC is a school that gives students a great opportunity to learn about other cultures and languages around the world.  I love ISLC because it’s a small community.  Everyone at ISLC knows everyone in the community. -A Parent
