Why the Explosive Interest in Chinese Language Study?

Chinese language media in the U.S. and worldwide have been looking on in wonder—and often disbelief—at the incredible growth of interest in studying Chinese by students of diverse backgrounds.

In this video clip, Sino TV news anchor Wei-lien Wen is joined by Dr. Ho Yong of the United Nations and Asia Society’s Chris Livaccari for an in-depth conversation about the reasons behind this surge in interest, and the challenges and opportunities facing the field. The conversation (conducted in Chinese) begins with an overview of some recent activities of schools in Asia Society’s Confucius Classrooms Network, and then goes on to include a consideration of topics from classroom teaching practices to broader issues of policy and trends in language education.

Chris was my teacher in high school, and I think it is interesting the differences he describes between Chinese students and American students.
