Indonesia's Economic Prospects in the Wake of the GFC

MELBORNE, May 22, 2009 – Asia Society AustralAsia Centre hosted H.E. Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Indonesia’s Finance Minister at a CEO luncheon briefing, in collaboration with the Australia–Indonesia Business Council. More than 60 senior business, political, and academic leaders attended the luncheon, one of the Centre's most anticipated luncheon briefing of this year.

As the financial crisis washed over the world, Indonesia managed the global recession better than most and is well positioned as one of Asia-Pacific’s strongest growing emergent-market. Indrawati is the person largely credited as the chief behind the huge task of re-shaping Indonesia’s economic policy and driving reforms in President Yudhoyono’s administration.

In a frank manner, Indrawati spoke of Indonesia’s present economic situation and its future fiscal plans, including the intention to maintain close economic relationships with Australia and other Asian countries thought the International Monetary Fund and various other means.

The luncheon was sponsored by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.
