VIEW EVENT DETAILSDrawing on material from his new book China in the 21st Century: What Everyone Needs to Know and from his frequent trips to Asia, Jeffrey Wasserstrom, a leading specialist in Chinese studies and a Professor of History at University of California Irvine, will discuss the shifting pace of Chinese politics and culture, including China's rapid urbanization and the changing patterns of protest in Chinese cities; the shifting role of the Internet as a factor in society and politics; the environmental fall out from industrialization; and the One Child Policy and China's aging population.
After the presentation Shawn McHale, Director of Sigur Center for Asian Studies at George Washington University and an Associate Professor of History and International Affairs, will chair a panel discussion with comments by: Warren Cohen, Distinguished University Professor of History and Presidential Research Professor at the University of Maryland and Senior Scholar with the Asia Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars; Nancy Bernkopf Tucker, Professor of History at Georgetown University and the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, as well as Senior Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center; and Dr. Carla Freeman, Associate Director of the China Studies Program in SAIS at Johns Hopkins University.
