The Road to 1911
VIEW EVENT DETAILSLuncheon Presentation by Liu Heung Shing, Photojournalist
2011 marks the centennial anniversary of the Wuchang Uprising in Wuhan, a revolution that toppled the Manchu Dynasty of Qing and paved the way for the founding of Asia’s first republic. On the eve of the anniversary, former foreign correspondent and photojournalist Liu Heung Shing will discuss his book and photo exhibition 1911, which reveals extraordinary historic photographs that vividly illustrate this period.
1911 will open in Hong Kong this summer and go on to tour several major Chinese cities. Liu will share his experiences in compiling this visual history of the period from the Second Opium War of 1860 to the end of the Warlord Era in 1930 and give the narrative a new context against the rise of contemporary China today, when the sensitive topic of nationalism is so easily misguided and misunderstood.
In a journalistic career spanning several decades, Hong Kong-born Liu Heung Shing held posts from Beijing to Los Angeles and New Delhi to Moscow for the Associated Press. He was named Best Photographer by the Associated Press Managing Editors, and was awarded Picture of the Year by the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri for recording the Tiananmen turmoil in 1989. In 1992, he shared a Pulitzer Prize for his coverage on Soviet Union’s collapse. Now living and working in Beijing, Liu co-authored Shanghai, A History in Photographs 1842 to Today, and edited China: Portrait of a Country, an epic visual history of the 60 years of the People's Republic.
Books will be on sale at the event.
