The Race for Water: Securing Asia's Water Future
VIEW EVENT DETAILSWith:
Mangesh Gupte, Head of CSR, ACC Limited
Upmanu Lall, Director, Columbia Water Center, Columbia University
Suresh Prabhu, Lok Sabha Member, Former Chairman of Task Force for Interlinking of Rivers
Access to a stable and safe water supply eludes many Asian countries. As communities struggle to extract limited water resources, major health issues and security concerns across and within national borders are raised. A reduced water supply can have far-reaching consequences, including mass migration, loss of livelihood, compromised food production and geo-political tensions in already vulnerable areas. Our panelists, representing diverse sectors and viewpoints, will discuss the current status of water security in the region and recommend strategies to ensure fair and sufficient access to water for all.
Mangesh Gupte has extensive experience in complying with water security standards from the corporate perspective. Previously, he has served as Deputy General Manager at HCC Ltd. He has participated in numerous conferences on water security, including VisionIndia, the 2009 International Water Summit, and Stockholm World Water Week. He was also on the Steering Committee of the United Nations CEO Water Mandate for two years, and actively participated in developing this initiative.
Upmanu Lall has 33 years of experience as a hydrologist, during which he has developed expertise in statistical and numerical modeling of hydrologic and climatic systems and water resource systems planning and management. He has pioneered statistical methods and their application to the prediction of hydrologic and climate conditions, and advanced tools for decision analysis and risk management. His research projects have covered water quantity and energy resource management, flood analysis, groundwater modeling and subsurface characterization, climate modeling, and the development of statistical and mathematical modeling methods. He has been involved as a consultant with specialization in groundwater flow and contaminant transport modeling covering mining operations, stream flow modeling and water balance, risk and environmental impact assessment, and site hydrologic evaluation.
Suresh Prabhu is a four-time member of the Lok Sabha from the Rajapur Constituency of Maharashtra. He was Chairman of Task Force for Interlinking of Rivers with a status and rank of Union Cabinet Minister. He was also elected a member of the World Bank parliamentary network and nominated as the Chairman of the South Asia Water Conference. In the Indian government, he has served as Industry Minister, Minister of Environment & Forests, Minister of Fertilizers & Chemicals, and Union Minister of Power, Heavy Industry & Public Enterprises.
