This week's announcement of state election results in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh are already having a deep impact on the Indian political scene. Hear directly from India-based economic adviser, analyst and writer Surjit Bhalla on the far-ranging implications of this election. Bhalla will examine the future of the Congress Party in the wake of this election, and draw some conclusions about the future of Indian politics, reform efforts and foreign policy.
Surjit Bhalla is Chairman of Oxus Investments, an economic research, asset management and emerging-markets advisory firm. He has taught at the Delhi School of Economics and has worked at the Rand Corporation, Brookings Institution, the World Bank, Goldman Sachs and Deutsche Bank. He is author of Between the Wickets - The Who and Why of the Best in Cricket (1987); Imagine There's No Country: Poverty, Inequality, and Growth in the Era of Globalization (2002); and Devaluing to Prosperity: Misaligned Currencies and their Growth Consequences (2012). He has been a member of several Indian government committees on economic policy, including as an appointed member of the National Statistical Commission of India, 2007-2010.
