My Sisters Made of Light: Book & Luncheon Discussion with Jacqueline St. Joan
VIEW EVENT DETAILSIn My Sisters Made of Light, Jacqueline St. Joan uses her extensive travels and research in Pakistan to share with readers a compelling, heartbreaking, and sometimes terrifying look into the lives of women and men in the social, political, and religious maze that is Pakistan. The novel centers on three activist sisters who dedicate themselves to helping the women of Pakistan. It exposes Western readers to Pakistan's myriad cultures. This raw but inspiring story of grass-roots resistance against oppression and injustice is inspirational, to say the least.
The author will donate half of her proceeds from the sale of this book to a personally known grassroots community organization in Pakistan to pay for the construction of a safe shelter for women and children escaping abuse.
Jacqueline St. Joan is an award-winning poet and travel writer, teacher, and lawyer. She has worked as a domestic violence advocate, a county judge, a law professor, and a child and human rights advocate, in a wide variety of public and private settings, which have earned her a number of professional awards. Her literary interests focus on the intersection of law, literature and the voices of contemporary women. She is co-editor of Beyond Portia: Women, Law, and Literature in the United States (Northeastern University Press). Her writings have appeared in Ms., The Denver Quarterly, Harvard Women's Law Journal, Empire Magazine, The Denver Post, and Thinking Women, Chrysalis. She has won writing awards from Colorado Council on the Humanities, The Rocky Mountain Women's Institute, Chrysalis Reader, The Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association, University of Colorado, and the Denver Press Club. She currently teaches Women and the Law at Metropolitan State College of Denver.
This event is co-hosted with the Woman's National Democratic Club (WNDC).
