Making India Work
VIEW EVENT DETAILSHard-hitting and provocative, Making India Work is a result of William Nanda Bissell’s journeys across rural and urban India, offering unique solutions to the challenges confronting its people.
In his new book, he proposes a radical new paradigm for development that delinks consumption from quality of life while strengthening the natural environment in the process. The central themes of Making India Work echo the ideas and beliefs that underpin the Constitution of India; however, they venture beyond the hackneyed phrases of development to focus on strategies which can, Bissell believes, end poverty in India in five years.
Despite experiencing one of the highest growth rates in the world, India continues to grapple with a number of problems, particularly poverty. In Making India Work, Bissell argues that economic development that consumes large amounts of natural resources and generates enormous pollution is not a luxury available to countries that are beginning their development now.
William Nanda Bissell is the Managing Director of Fabindia, a company committed to the retail of products made by craft and small producer groups throughout India. Mr. Bissell grew up in Delhi. After a BA degree from the US, he returned to India to start an artisans’ cooperative in rural Rajasthan. Later he joined Fabindia, the company his father, John Bissell, had established, and built it into one of the world’s largest craft-based marketing organizations. Today, Mr. Bissell works with over 40,000 crafts people, and Fabindia is one of India’s best-known brands. Fabindia is a pioneer in the Community Owned Company movement, having converted all its small artisan clusters into Community Owned Companies (COCs).
