Real-Life 'Slumdog Millionaire' Wins India's Biggest Prize
A government clerk from Eastern Bihar in India has become the first person ever to win $1 million on the Indian game show Who Wants to be a Millionaire.
The startling rags-to-riches story of Sushil Kumar reflects the plot of the movie Slumdog Millionaire, directed by Danny Boyle in 2008. (An Asia Society op-ed covered the controversy the film generated in India.) Kumar, 26, lives in the small town of Motihari in the eastern state of Bihar, one of the poorest regions in India, working as a government computer operator and part-time tutor with a salary of $120 a month.
