Preparing Chinese Language Teachers Initiative

Funded by the Freeman Foundation

Funded by the Freeman Foundation

Introduction

Selected from a small list of US universities that had established a track record of tr
aining and educating Chinese language teachers, the Freeman Foundation recently awarded grants to six universities to expand their groundbreaking efforts to prepare Chinese language teachers.  This distinguished group of grantees includes the New York University, Rutgers University, University of Pennsylvania, George Mason University, Rice University, and the University of Hawaii. On September 27, 2007, Asia Society convened the first annual Grantees' Meetings to discuss strategies and issues that face Chinese teacher preparation programs and to begin to think about how the lessons from these pioneering programs could be most effectively shared with other institutions.
