August 15, 2023 - A group of Asia Society Innovator and Groundbreaker Members and Volunteers enjoyed a specialized Chinatown tour with Josh Chuck, the co-director of Chinatown Rising – a documentary film about the Asian American Movement from the perspective of the Chinatown residents on the front lines of neighborhood transition. The director recounted the story of his film through an interactive tour format, walking streets shown in the movie and reliving important moments of Chinatown history. Chuck reminded us about the important lives and stories held within this historic San Francisco district, which is right in Asia Society Northern California’s backyard. Highlights of the tour include the International Hotel, iconic site of civil unrest in advocacy for Chinese and Filipino elders; Cameron House, an important Chinese community space; and Portsmouth Square, known as the "living room" of Chinatown where community members gather to play Mahjong and practice tai chi.
